Verso la metà degli anni 80, Maren vive con il padre in Virginia ed è un’adolescente come tante. La sua vera natura costringe però il padre ad abbandonarla e a lasciarla al suo destino. Rimasta sola, Maren parte alla ricerca della madre che non ha mai conosciuto e lungo il tragitto conosce persone come lei, vagabondi ed emarginati nella società americana dell’era Reagan, tra cui Lee, di poco più grande, sbandato e affascinante, con il quale Maren prosegue il suo viaggio. Stato dopo stato, dal Maryland al Nebraska, incontro dopo incontro, Maren e Lee trovano la propria strada, incerti e spaventati di fronte all’irrompere del desiderio che li guida.
