Mikhail Ivanov’s review: This annotation should begin and end with the fact that the painting, set at the end of 1939 in Venice, is an indisputable masterpiece. An elderly art professor is madly in love with his beautiful wife, but she does not respond with equal passion, thinking about the young Laszlo, his daughter’s husband. He writes down his wishes in a diary and leaves the key to the table so that she can find and read it. Read. Pretending to ‘become unconscious’, she provoked her husband to have sexual intercourse in the light, thinking of Laszlo, who had previously massaged her legs and given her an injection and unequivocally walked over her legs and buttocks. Then she starts her diary, and he finds it. She becomes László’s mistress, and all the participants in this love quadrangle (the daughter also knows everything and reads both diaries) already understand why all this is being done. The professor says goodbye to life, which for him is identified with carnal love, since the soul is immortal. In his diary, he wrote to his wife: ‘Teresa, I beg you, lie to me if you need to, but tell me that you only use it to excite my lust…’ Then he hesitates for a moment whether to write the word ‘love’, crosses it out, and still writes ‘lust’. Sincerely grateful to her husband for his understanding and wisdom, she gives him that night of love, after which he dies happy. In this film, the director, screenwriter and producer Tinto Brass contrasts life with Mussolini’s fascism, knowing that everything will pass like water in which Teresa’s hand is dipped. And she remains a ‘faithful traitor’, and he asks not to bury him at the funeral. I’m not even talking about the cinematic merits! Every color, sound, face, gesture is comparable only to the works of the old masters, which the professor, who reconciled himself to death, loved so much. Music by Ennio Morricone/
