Un giovane demone, Devilman, viene spedito sulla Terra per far trionfare il regno delle tenebre. Devilman si impossessa del corpo di un ragazzo, Akira Fudo, ucciso insieme a suo padre da lui stesso. Nelle sembianze di Akira, Devilman viene adottato dai Makimura, amici dei genitori di Akira, e si innamora della loro figlia, Miki Makimura. L’amore verso una fanciulla umana rappresenta un torto per il regno dei demoni che, guidato dal Grande Zenon, che aveva spedito Devilman sulla Terra per annientare il genere umano, non può tollerare. Inizia così una terribile guerra tra Devilman e i suoi ex-alleati.
