Il tenente colonnello Lewis “Chesty” Puller tiene un discorso ai Marines del suo battaglione e annuncia loro che combatteranno la guerra sul fronte del Pacifico, dove l’Impero giapponese sta ottenendo numerose vittorie. La Prima Divisione Marines, di cui fanno parte tra gli altri i Marines John Basilone e Robert Leckie, viene quindi mandata sull’isola di Guadalcanal, un luogo fino a poco tempo prima sconosciuto.
